4/1/2012 – And we’re off….

Woke up several times last night worrying about getting through the harbor entrance which is known for having breaking waves across it occasionally. When we left to go out to dinner last night we noticed that the red flag was up which means the port is closed. But it was dead calm at the marina. Probably just forgot to take it down, right?

We got up this morning at 6:45. It seemed like 5:45 to us since last night was when we went to Daylight Savings time and turned our clocks ahead. The red flag was down which was a good thing and most of the weather sites called for pretty reasonably calm winds and seas for the next few days. However, one of them was warning about the big swells up north that were going to be generated by a weather system off the northern Pacific coast of Baja. We don’t want to get caught in anything nasty. What to do? Leave? Stay? Wait? Go to an anchorage and wait? Too many options and no one to tell us which one is the right one.

Ultimately we decided to just go. When we were getting of the dock with help from dockmates, one mentioned that there had been 12′ seas at the harbor entrance yesterday. Good to hear. So that’s why the red flag. And now it’s down so it’s all good, right?

Got underway w/o incident and wended our way slowly to the breakwater. We followed a big power yacht out. There were big swells, maybe 5′, but fortunately they weren’t breaking. We just rode over them and set our course for Isla San Francisco.

The day has been amazingly comfortable. Fairly smooth with little wind. We did manage to sail for awhile but then the wind died back down. Right now we’re motorsailing with the main up. Hoping for a calm and pleasant night.

Okay, not that much fun typing in a moving boat. I keep having to correct mistakes, so I’m going to quit now. Have a nice night and wish us well.

About sryoder

Steve & Lulu... retired. Had enough of the cold wet dreary fall/winter/spring in the Pacific Northwest. Bought a boat, fixed it up, sold our home and sailed to Mexico in November, 2010. Been here ever since except for occasional forays to the States (summer only, thank you) to visit the kids, parents and siblings. If you're looking for a sailing blog, this is the wrong place. This is a traveling, hunkering in, eating blog. Sailing is just how we get from place to place when we can't walk.

Well now you are on your way:). I will tell you this post is the best with paragraphs and continuity that I have ever read from people sending them via radiowaves. Now you just need hone those “asci art” skills and get some illustration to these posts. Then you’d truly be Grand Master Yoder.

Thanks for posting, boat motion induced typos and all. I didn’t notice any typos anyway! Last position report is from 3/26 in Mazatlan, btw. But you won’t see this note till whenever. I just thought it’d be fun to see your waypoint out in the middle somewhere…

May you have calm seas and fair winds.

Position is now showing on the “HERE” link below the cluster map. Assuming poition reports are in UCT, it was logged about the same time Steve blogged. The map update may just be a bit slow, who knows. It is very cool to see where they are!
