10/28/2014 – Headed to the Grand Canyon

Well, we’ve had a very nice 3-day rest-up here in Kanab.  Went out to eat at Escobar’s Mexican Restaurant and wandered down to the Little Hollywood Museum.  It’s actually just a collection of movie sets (about half of which actually appeared in actual movies) from Kanab’s heyday as the place to film Westerns, both movies and TV shows.  There are two grocery stores here, one of which is closed on Sunday, one hardware store, also closed on Sunday, a couple fast food places and restaurants, etc.  Everything is walking distance from the RV Park (Kanab RV Corral) we’re in. There are two other RV Parks in town as well.

Since we’ve been here, Lulu built new curtains for the window alongside the “dining room” table.  We also got all of our laundry done, including rugs. I spent most of my time fixing flat tires on my bike.  This place is riddled with little thorns (“goat’s heads) that get stuck in the tires.  The thorns aren’t all that long and should be harmless to a decent tire,  But the el cheapo tires that came on these bikes are apparently very thin and one thorn worked its way through on both my front and rear tires.  No tubes the right size available at Ace Hardware so I patched the existing tubes and then put some of that green goo in them to help them self-repair if anything else works its way through the tire.  Next time we’re someplace larger I guess I’d better buy us some new tires and tubes.

Today we’ll be heading to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.  Looks like we’re just going to make it as, according to the interweb, the road in will be closed on November 1st.  Or maybe it’s just the campground that will close, but either way….  I managed to make reservations for 2 nights on the north rim followed by 3 nights on the south rim.  There’s a 220 mile drive from one campground to the other.  That will be about our longest day yet but, there doesn’t look to be much of anything in between so we’ll just have to steel ourselves.  Towns, even itty bitty ones also look pretty sparse along the way so I think I’ll fill the auxiliary gas tank before we leave today.  Hate to drag the extra weight up the grades but I’d hate running out of gas even more.

So, likely there will be no internet, or at least no convenient internet available for us for the next 5 days at least.  So, see ya on the other side.

About sryoder

Steve & Lulu... retired. Had enough of the cold wet dreary fall/winter/spring in the Pacific Northwest. Bought a boat, fixed it up, sold our home and sailed to Mexico in November, 2010. Been here ever since except for occasional forays to the States (summer only, thank you) to visit the kids, parents and siblings. If you're looking for a sailing blog, this is the wrong place. This is a traveling, hunkering in, eating blog. Sailing is just how we get from place to place when we can't walk.
